OFFICE OF THE MAGISTRATE, 10TH OCTOBER

THE HUNT, of which the Magistrate had the pleasure of speaking on Sunday evening, is confirmed. The party assembles at GARDEN REACH on Saturday the 15th instant, at FIVE o'clock in the morning, and proceeds thence into the district. The Magistrate's own elephants and shikarree are engaged; the camp is made ahead; guns will be found for any gentleman who does not bring his own; the ladies are provided for in every particular. The party lies at camp on Saturday night, the drive is made on Sunday, and the return is by Sunday evening. A tiger has been marked in the district.

Thu 13 OctMorning: Mr Mullick shows the Misses Wentworth his godowns on the Strand. Afternoon: up the river to Baranagar, where the Acharya Ghosh houses the party for the night, on the Magistrate's letter. Mrs Courtney's Committee sits the same day; Mrs Cavendish is asked to bring Mrs Ward.

Fri 14 OctThe Vicomte goes on to Chandernagore in the Acharya's own boat on the morning flood, and comes down again on the evening ebb.

Sat 15 – Sun 16 OctThe Magistrate's tiger hunt. Assembly at Garden Reach, five in the morning; a night under canvas in the district; return Sunday evening. The second Sunday at St John's is lost to it.

Tue 18 OctMr Mullick's Nautch, the Burra Bazar, nine o'clock. Whether ladies attend a nautch is argued in every drawing room in Calcutta.

Fri 21 OctDinner at the Mess, Fort William, seven o'clock. Colonel Blackwood presiding. Gentlemen only.

Tue 25 OctKali Puja — the festival of the goddess, kept on the new moon at the end of the rains. Lamps, offerings, and rites at the burning ghats. The whole city will be out. ● new moon
