CORRESPONDENCE.

To the Editor of the Calcutta Gazette.

SIR, It cannot be creditable to a Christian government that within four miles of this Presidency there are held, by night and with the connivance of the police, assemblies of a character which I will not describe in a publication that may come into the hands of ladies. I have myself, upon the 3rd instant, stood upon the river bank at the hour of eleven and heard the drumming continue without cessation until I withdrew. Lights were carried upon the water. The attendance cannot have been fewer than two hundred souls.

I am told by those who profess to know that these are matters of religion and that I do not understand them. I reply that I understand what I heard.
