Background
Surgeon at the military hospital. Met Patience at the hospital in Madras when she was nursing there, and married her, which his colleagues considered a mistake and which was the best decision of his life.
He signs a great many death certificates and has stopped expecting most of them to be accurate.
Motivations
To keep people alive with insufficient supplies, and to say true things out loud in a society that would rather he did not.
