Twenty-nine.
Description
Twenty-nine. Three years in Bengal. The face is what people see first and cannot stop seeing. A tulwar took his left ear and most of the cheek below it during a skirmish near Cawnpore. Badly stitched by a regimental surgeon who was drunk and in a hurry. The scar tissue pulls his mouth into a permanent half-smile on the left side, exposing teeth. One eye sits slightly lower than the other where the orbital bone healed wrong. He keeps what remains of his hair cropped brutally short because anything longer catches in the scar tissue.
The body beneath is lean, efficient, maintained. He moves like a man who has been hit many times and learned exactly how far he can move to avoid being hit again.
