University Reconnaissance Aug 10

Summary

Katherine and Nell conducted a covert reconnaissance of the University of Vienna on the night of 10 August 1814, navigating back routes to reach the Universitätsplatz undetected.

Context

Planned since Session 11, when Nell arrived at the safehouse with intelligence that the criminal underworld around the university had gone completely silent. Katherine and Nell planned to scout together; execution carried forward to Session 12.

Participants

• Katherine — lead operative, mapped guard patterns, overheard German she could not understand
• Nell — climber, translator, provided rooftop vantage point

Outcome & Consequences

Intelligence gathered:

• Five guards total: two at the main entrance, two on a 15-minute circuit, one at the side door
• Side door guard patrols to the east corner every 20-30 minutes, leaving a 2-3 minute gap
• Herzfeld observed working in a lit second-floor office in the medical wing
• Sub-audible vibration felt by both women, below the threshold of hearing but physically unmistakable
• Guards’ overheard conversation (Nell translated): professor wants everything finished in three nights (deadline is 13 August, not 15th)
• One guard has already quit rather than endure the vibration

Casualties: Katherine fell from the drainpipe on descent (minor injuries). Nell descended without difficulty.

Forward impact: This intelligence directly shaped the War Council assault plan. The timeline shift (13 August, not 15th) forced the party to accelerate.
