Description

A large British petty officer’s buckle in silver, worn by Sona Mia, the Shah Alam’s seacunny. He has had it forty years and polished it every day of them, and it shows: the metal has the soft, worked shine of something handled daily rather than kept.

He sits with it outside the passengers’ cabin on the fine evenings and works at it while the ship steers itself under his hands.

Properties

Nothing supernatural. It is a buckle.

Its actual function is social: he will show it to anyone who asks, and tell a different story about where he got it every time. Won gambling. Taken off a wife’s dead lover. A gift from an Emir. The tellings are equally sincere and mutually exclusive, and he has never once been embarrassed by the discrepancy.
