St. Margaret’s Academy
Description
A charity school for young ladies outside Helmsley, on the southern edge of the North York Moors, roughly twenty-five miles north of York. The place that shaped Katherine Ward twice over — once as the child who was raised and orphaned here, and once, years later, as the operative who returned in disguise to solve a problem the school itself never understood it had.
Notable Features
- The grounds and service areas where Katherine’s parents, Thomas and Eleanor Langley, worked — her father in maintenance and groundskeeping, her mother in laundry and domestic management.
- Corridors and rooms with unusually perfect, uninterrupted angles — the structural feature that gave a Hound of Tindalos access to the school in the years after Katherine left. The headmistress had unknowingly been tracking when rooms were empty and corridors silent, the precise conditions the Hound needed.
Connections
- Katherine Ward — raised here as a charity student after her father’s groundskeeping position and her mother’s laundry work earned the family a place. Both parents died of influenza before Katherine could graduate, ending her charity education and beginning her life on the streets of Southwark. She returned years later under a servant’s disguise, identified the Hound of Tindalos preying on the school through its angle-sensitivity, and contained it by disrupting the geometry that gave it access — altering cleaning schedules, leaving doors ajar, moving furniture to break perfect angles, cluttering stairwells. The creature was not destroyed but starved into withdrawal. This success is what first brought Katherine to the Order’s attention, rather than her earlier career as a thief.
- Hound of Tindalos — contained here, not currently a threat. The connection between this containment and the deepening geometric/harmonic themes of the Vienna Engine is a live thread in Katherine’s own file (see her Session 10 nightmare, where the Hound and the Engine’s influence are explicitly linked).
