Description

A retired French military officer in his fifties, friendly and sociable, who served under Napoleon’s Armée d’Orient during the Egyptian expedition and chose to remain in Alexandria after the Emperor’s exile. He has made a life as a merchant in the Frank Quarter, and holds court easily in the common room of the Locanda del Leone.

Background

One of the Frenchmen left behind by history — a soldier of the 1798–1801 Egyptian campaign who stayed when the army left, married Egypt’s commerce instead of marching home. Two decades in the country have made him a deep well of practical knowledge about travel, officials, and the routes inland.

Motivations

  • Good company, good wine, and the pleasure of speaking his own language with a countryman of breeding (Adrien).
  • No agenda toward the party — he is exactly the friendly, useful expatriate he appears to be.

Connections

  • Met at the Locanda del Leone (Session 3). Gave Adrien the key travel intelligence for the journey to Cairo (see GM Notes).
  • Name-dropped reputable Nile boatmen — the soft lead toward Reis Ibrahim at Rosetta.

Appearances

Relationships

  • Countryman-to Adrien de Montferrand — Recognises Adrien as a fellow Frenchman; bonds over drinks and gives him the Cairo travel intelligence
  • Patron-of Locanda del Leone — A regular of the inn's common room
