A lean, sun-blackened Nile captain in his fifties, bare-chested under a striped galabiya, with a grey-stubbled jaw and a permanent squint from forty years on the river’s glare. Calm, unhurried, sparing with words. Reads the wind and the shoals like print. Steers his dahabiya — the Bint al-Nil (“Daughter of the Nile”), a lateen-rigged river barge with a small cabin aft — from the same tiller his father held.
Background
Born and based at Rosetta (Rashid), where the Nile meets the sea. Runs cargo and passengers up to Bulaq, the port of Cairo, and back. Known on the waterfront as honest, cautious, and slow to anger — which is exactly why Capitaine Thibault names him to the party (see Locanda del Leone / Session 03 Alexandria).
Motivations
- A fair fare, an unbroken boat, and his crew of four fed. He will not cheat — his name on the river is worth more than one rich fare.
- Gets his passengers there whole; will lay up rather than risk the boat in bad water.
