Reis Salah
Description
A lean, barefoot coastal boatman in his thirties, gold tooth, a fast easy grin, and a small lateen djerm that has seen better decades. Cheap, quick, and careless. He runs the shore route ~40 miles east from Alexandria to Rosetta (Rashid), hugging the coast.
Background
Produced by Yusuf for the party’s first leg toward Cairo. He swears the dangerous bar at the Rosetta river-mouth is “nothing, nothing” — it is not, in a swell. The kind of boatman who gets you there most of the time and tells you a good story the whole way.
Motivations
- A fare and a fast turnaround. Joseph takes a cut, so the opening price runs high — meant to be bargained down.
- Cheerful, not malicious; cuts corners on comfort and caution alike.
Connections
- The Alexandria → Rosetta coastal leg. Hands the party off to Reis Ibrahim’s Nile dahabiya at Rosetta for the run upriver to Bulaq/Cairo. See Session 03 Alexandria.
- Nathaniel Holt — threw his weight onto the tiller alongside Rais Salah at the dangerous Rosetta bar, earning the captain’s respect (Session 4).

Session 4 Developments
The predicted hazard played out as written: at the mouth of the Nile, two riptides collided over the submerged bar and the brown river shoved out against the sea in a confusion of standing waves and broken foam. Rais Salah — the transcript’s spelling of his name — began losing the fight with the tiller. Nathaniel Holt, reading the water with a sailor’s instinct, threw his own weight onto the tiller alongside the captain; the boat swung clear between the booms and the party slid safely into the calm of the river mouth, arriving at Rashid (Rosetta). The captain was visibly impressed by Holt’s strength and seamanship — a small but genuine mark of respect from a boatman who otherwise treats the crossing as routine. The strongbox rode the whole coastal leg stowed under Salah’s own feet at the tiller.
