Overview

Dr. Heinrich Voss is a 55-year-old Viennese physician who serves as a medical asset in Major Thurner’s Order-adjacent network. He treats wounds, asks nothing, and leaves. His professional discretion is not a personality quirk — it is a practised discipline, probably learned across decades of treating patients who include people with reasons to avoid official scrutiny. Honoria dispatched him to Thaliastraße 12 via Charles in the predawn hours of 9 August, and he arrived before sunrise.

Physical Description

Mid-fifties, broad-shouldered and going soft. Grey beard trimmed close, deliberate hands that move with the practised economy of someone who has sewn a great many wounds in poor light. He dresses in civilian clothes that are slightly too fine for a house call at dawn — dark wool coat, good boots, a physician’s bag of worn leather. He trained in Vienna and later at Leiden, and he carries both in his manner: the formal Austrian gravity and the Dutch clinical bluntness.

He does not comment on hamstrung prisoners or sedated sopranos. He examines, treats, dispenses, and departs.

Session 10 Appearance — Thaliastraße 12 (9 August 1814)

Voss arrived at the safehouse at dawn, brought by Charles on Honoria’s instruction. He treated two patients:

Emma Wentworth — knife wound beneath the left armpit. He cleaned the wound, stitched it, and dressed it with linen. His advice: twenty-four hours of strict bed rest, no use of the arm, return to him or any competent physician at the first sign of heat in the tissue. The wound is survivable if kept clean; infection is the risk.

Anna Lindqvist — bruised throat and strained vocal cords. He examined her larynx, prescribed warm tea with honey and enforced silence — no speaking, no singing, certainly no screaming — for at least forty-eight hours. He expressed no curiosity about how a young soprano came to be in a Josefstadt safehouse with bruising consistent with manual strangulation.

Laudanum. Before leaving, Voss produced a large apothecary bottle — at least ten doses — and left it with the party at Georgiana’s persuasion. He named a dosage ceiling. Whether it is observed is not his concern.

He left his calling card: a plain card, printed rather than engraved, with a Josefstadt address and no other information.

What Voss Can Provide

  • Field medicine for wounds, infections, and physical trauma
  • Pharmaceutical supplies — laudanum, tinctures, dressings — through legitimate dispensing channels
  • A discreet address in Josefstadt that does not appear in any Geheimpolizei register the party currently knows about
  • Referral into Vienna’s medical establishment, if the party ever needs a surgeon or specialist

Limitations

Voss is not a field operative. He will not carry a weapon, follow a party into danger, or provide testimony against anyone. He is available at his Josefstadt address during surgery hours and via message through Thurner’s network otherwise. He charges for his services; the Order presumably settles the account.
