Polizeidirektion
Leadership: Viennese police command structure
Territory: Vienna proper
Overview
The Polizeidirektion is the official Vienna police authority responsible for maintaining public order. It is distinct from (and generally subordinate to) the Geheimpolizei, though both coordinate on matters of state security.
Campaign Role
The Polizeidirektion is primarily a bureaucratic obstacle rather than an active antagonist. Key functions:
- Legal Authority: Can arrest and detain based on law rather than political suspicion
- Investigation Authority: Can investigate crimes reported against party members
- Public Record: Police records and archives contain valuable intelligence
- Security Response: Police force can be mobilized for raids or arrests
Known Complications
Marina Garrick’s Confiscated Notebook (Session 4): During the Palais Kinsky search on August 6, police confiscated Marina’s investigation notebook containing notes from London and Lyon. This notebook compromises operational security if Geheimpolizei links it to Order activities.
Relationship with Geheimpolizei
The Polizeidirektion works with but is distinct from the secret police. Metternich’s Geheimpolizei generally supersedes local police on security matters, but the Polizeidirektion maintains independent authority over criminal investigations.
