Description

Vienna’s natural history and philosophy institute, and the professional home of Dr. Ernst Falkner. Unremarkable in itself, but the site of the single most consequential intelligence briefing of the Vienna chapter: it was here, on the party’s first full day in the city, that the entire shape of the Herzfeld conspiracy was laid out for the first time.

Notable Features

A private office with a door that locks and curtains that draw — the setting Falkner insisted on before he would speak freely.

Connections

  • Ernst Falkner — geologist and natural philosopher, and the party’s key Order-sympathetic contact in Vienna. Not a formal Order member, but a source with deep personal motivation: his daughter Margarethe (Margaret), a talented soprano, disappeared over a year prior after auditioning for Herzfeld’s “special project.”
  • The Session 1 briefing. Falkner locked the door, drew the curtains, and told the party everything: that Professor Herzfeld had reopened a sealed anatomical theatre beneath the University two years earlier for “acoustic research”; that musicians had been vanishing from Vienna for three years, always talented, always foreign, always without local family; that his own daughter was among them. He named Adler as the recruiter, Trauttmansdorff as the financial backer, and Baron von Kaunitz as the society’s shield. He also flagged Fräulein Lindqvist as a scout target, gave the party letters of access identifying them as visiting scholars at the University, and mentioned a former Herzfeld assistant expelled for drunkenness (later identified as Dr. Brenner) as a possible ally. This single briefing was, for a time, the party’s sole source on Herzfeld, Adler, the Engine, and the vanished musicians — no redundant clue path existed yet.
