Description
Twenty-eight. Went out to the Peninsula at twenty-two as a captain of Foot and came home in 1813 without a mark on him.
He sleeps in the day. He does not sleep at night. He will not sit with his back to a door, he cannot bear the sound of the estate carpenter working, and he once put his hand through a window at the sound of a rook gun and could not afterwards say why. He is gentle with his sisters and he is not there.
He is the heir. Hawthorne Grange is entailed to him. He does not open post from Salisbury.
Background
Whatever happened to him happened somewhere between Badajoz and the border and he has never described it to anybody. His sisters know the shape of it from what he does rather than what he says.
The household calls it his health. His father calls it nothing at all.
