Description
Sixty-one. Baronet, of Hawthorne Grange in Tarryford, Wiltshire. He inherited an estate that had already outrun its income once, and he has spent thirty years economising with great dignity and no great success.
He is going, and everyone at the Grange knows it and nobody has said the word. He spends his days in the glasshouse. He talks to the plants, which the household finds touching. Some days he argues with them, which it does not.
He signs what is put in front of him.
Background
The Wentworths were respectable Wiltshire gentry by the middle of the last century, known locally for their entertainments and their patronage. The money behind that came partly from an Indian interest acquired two generations ago and never since examined by anyone in England.
His wife was Cassandra Wentworth, whose name Georgiana gave to an Alexandrian scribe for a protective prayer, some thousands of miles from either of them.
