The old greffier of the French council, who has kept Chandernagore's land register and notarial minutes for forty years, through two French governments and the British.
Overview
The old greffier of the French council, who has kept Chandernagore’s land register and notarial minutes for forty years, through two French governments and the British. He comes with the record room in the old Government House as surely as the presses do.
Appearance & Manner
Bent, bald, with ink-black fingertips and a pair of steel spectacles mended with thread. He smells of camphor, which he puts in the presses against the insects. He speaks in the long, exact sentences of a legal document and stops in the middle of them to blow dust off a page.
History
Came out as a clerk in 1774 and took over the greffe in the 1780s. The British let him keep his key because nobody else could find anything.
