The British Commandant of Chandernagore, the Company officer who has run the occupied French town from the old Government House on the Strand.
Overview
The British Commandant of Chandernagore, the Company officer who has run the occupied French town from the old Government House on the Strand. Ashworth’s chit names him as the man told to open the 1792 titles to the Vicomte (Ashworth Chandernagore Chit).
Appearance & Manner
A big, heavy-shouldered man going soft at the middle, his face burned brick-red to the line of a hat and white above it. He speaks a soldier’s French, slow and correct, with every verb in the present tense, and he is plainly glad of any visitor who will talk to him in English.
History
A Bengal officer of more than twenty years. He has been at Chandernagore long enough to know every French family on the Strand by name and to be invited by none of them.
