Garden Reach, Tuesday morning.

My dear Vicomte,

Since you are resolved to go up on Thursday with your party, let me make it easy. I enclose a letter to Ghosh, which you will deliver yourself. I have left it open, as is proper, so that you may read what I say of you and correct me if I have said too much.

Ghosh will house you all on Thursday night and think it an honour. On Friday his own boat can take you up to Chandernagore on the morning flood, which will have you there before noon, and if you will let it bring you down again on the evening ebb you will be at my steps by four on Saturday morning, an hour before we mount. I would not for the world have you miss the tiger on my account, and I would not have you tell the French of Chandernagore that the Magistrate kept you a week either. A day will do for what I want. The titles are in the old Government House there and the Commandant, a Captain Ord, has been told to open them to you.

I have written to Colonel Blackwood about Friday sennight. He will give you a dinner and hear you out about his engineer, though I warn you he is a man who wants a reason on paper.

Come to me directly if anything is wanted.

Yours very sincerely, Ch. Ashworth

I forgot. The Baron sends his regrets for Tuesday evening, which is unlike him. You will meet him at the hunt.
