Description
The house stands a little back from the temple ghat, white and lamplit, two storeys of lime-washed brick round a courtyard, with its whole river side open: a pillared verandah below and another above, looking west across the water to the lamps of the embankment works. The temple’s ochre wall rises beside it to the north. Lamp smoke, sandalwood and the river come in through every door.
What’s Here
- The river verandah: a long pillared hall open to the river on the west side, where the Acharya dines his guests. Steps run down from it to the river path and the temple ghat.
- The courtyard: a paved square with a well and a tulsi plant on a plinth, lamps in niches round the walls.
- The household shrine: a raised platform on the courtyard’s north side, with a small image, flowers and a lamp.
- The guest rooms: upstairs, along the upper verandah, freshly swept and whitewashed, with beds under mosquito nets, water jars and lamps.
- The roof: a flat terrace with a parapet, reached by a stair from the courtyard, looking over the temple, the burning ground and the river.
- Ghosh’s boat: moored at the temple ghat below the house. Hugh Cavendish calls it the best on the river.
History
Charles Ashworth arranged for the party to lodge here on Thursday 13 October, on the way to Chandernagore: “Ghosh will house you all on Thursday night and think it an honour” (Ashworth Chandernagore Chit). Ghosh’s boat is to take the Vicomte upriver on Friday’s morning flood.
