Description
A village on the east bank of the Hooghly roughly eight miles north of Calcutta, past Sutanuti and up Chitpur Road. The river here runs north to south. Mandir Mahakali stands on the same bank a little north of the village, upstream of it; Renwick’s embankment works stand on the western bank opposite, downstream of the temple. (Keeper ruling 2026-10-04.) Old Dutch and Portuguese factories stood here before the Company, and the place has been a river settlement for far longer than that.
It has ghats, a bazaar, weavers, boatmen, and Mandir Mahakali, a Kali temple of local reputation and disproportionate income under Ghosh these twenty years.
The Senses
- Smell. Woodsmoke, ghee, marigold, river silt, and on some mornings a rendered-fat sweetness over the water that the crows find first.
- Sound. Ordinary village noise, and at the right hour drumming carried on water, which travels much further than anyone expects.
- Colour. Ochre and lime-washed brick, marigold orange at the ghat steps, and the flat brown river taking all of it.

In Play
Chapter 4, Session 10 (9–10 October 1814) — a visit fixed. At the compound council the party decided to travel to Baranagar together on Thursday 13 October and lodge overnight before Adrien continues to Chandernagore (Compound Council 9 October). At table, Hale volunteered the lights and chanting seen from his night patrols, and Mrs Wright the singing heard across the water at three in the morning.
Appearances
- Session 15 - The River of Rites and Ruin — the party walked the bazaar lane at dusk and bought shawls at a weaver’s stall, then fled through the dark streets that night to the dak bungalow.
