Description

Quiet, well-mannered, and practical, travelling alone and entirely untroubled by it. She is in her thirties, dressed sensibly rather than fashionably, and she handles the desert better than several men who have made a point of explaining it to her.

What people notice about her, when they notice her at all, is that she listens. She asks thoughtful questions and then she lets the answer finish. In a caravan containing Gerald Hewitt, this made her the most restful person on the road, and it is why she was never short of company at a halt. Only afterward, once the body was found and the story came apart, did any of it read as anything but kindness.

Background

She travelled as a widow, going east to settle her late husband’s affairs, and said she had never been to India. Every word of it was a cover. She is Miss Ashby, never married, and she was raised in Calcutta, the daughter of an indigo trader whom Gerald Hewitt destroyed fifteen years ago when she was fifteen years old. A kickback taken, a man cut out of the trade, a family ruined, and Hewitt never gave it a second thought. Her father came home bankrupt and drank himself to death.

She tracked Hewitt across two continents and waited for a caravanserai, because a caravanserai is a box with one road out and a storm season. At Wadi al Tih, on the night the sandstorm sealed the gate, she took her revenge.

The Homecoming

Her father, Silas Ashby, was English. Her mother, Sarala Dasi, is Bengali — Silas’s bibi for eighteen years, and never his wife in English law, because she could not be. In the Company’s eyes Elizabeth is therefore illegitimate, and always was.

She grew up in a Calcutta household that ran in two languages, and Bengali was the one her mother used. This is why Katherine heard what she heard at the night camp. The Indian-English lilt under the widow’s Home Counties vowels was never an affectation or a slip of craft — it was her first language surfacing under strain, the truest thing about her, and it is what undid the lie.

Her mother’s family are river people: Nikhil Dasi and his boats have run cargo on the Hooghly for generations. That is not incidental to the marriage. It is the reason for it — boats are how indigo moves, and Silas Ashby married into the river because the river was his business.

When the collapse came and Silas drank himself to death, an English cousin and her father’s creditors arranged Elizabeth’s passage “home” to England as an act of charity. They took the daughter who could pass and left the rest of the family where it was — her mother, and her younger sister Malati, who was not English enough to be worth rescuing. Elizabeth got a passage and an education. Malati got the river. Neither of them chose it.

Her mother called her Bela. Nobody has used that name to her in fifteen years.

The Killing (now known to the party)

She confessed the moment the evidence was laid out, without hesitation or remorse. Method: an opium tincture in the tea she offered Hewitt at the evening fire, then a thin silk cord applied from behind to a man face-down and deeply asleep. The locked room: paper slid under the door, the key pushed out with a hairpin and drawn back through, the door unlocked and entered; on leaving, a thread tied round the key’s bow and fed back through the keyhole to pull the key into the lock from outside. A short length of that thread snapped and stayed caught in the mechanism. It was her only mistake in fifteen years, and it matched the sewing kit in her luggage. She handed over the silk cord unasked. Here it is. Keep it.

Aboard the Shah Alam — Session 7

She walked into Suez beside the party with nothing left to conceal and asked for nothing. At The Watering Hole she took Adrien’s arm and asked him not to leave her to float around the room alone, and then told him her whole history. She was on the waterfront at dawn with Adrien and Holt when the Shah Alam was taken from under the Ottoman commissariat.

Within a day of sailing she was speaking Bengali to the lascar crew — easily, correctly, at ease in a way nobody else aboard can manage — and they answered her. No investigator can follow a word of it. She spends time with Adrien and takes an interest in his sketches.

At Socotra she went ashore with the watering party, searched the beach with Georgiana — the two of them backing quietly away from the islander child in the grass without a word between them — and then went into the caves through the lower tunnel with the rest of the party. She was in the grab pool and was not taken. She did not hesitate about going in.

In Play

Chapter 4, Session 8 (8 October 1814) — home. She came ashore at Chandpal Ghat with the party after fifteen years away. Asked about her plans, she said her family lived in Blacktown, the Indian quarter — and Pratap Singh understood in that moment exactly what she was, a white-passing woman of mixed birth coming home to the family she was taken from. He said nothing about it. No European present noticed anything at all.

She has asked Adrien to chaperone her to visit her family. He has agreed in principle; no day has been set. See Sutanuti.

Chapter 4, Session 9 (9 October 1814) — she asked for company. During the afternoon at the Cavendish Compound she spoke about her anxiety over reuniting with the family she was separated from fifteen years ago, and asked for company when she eventually visits Blacktown. No day was set. She passed part of the afternoon over a chess set while the monsoon rain held.

She attended the Magistrate’s dinner at Garden Reach as one of the party’s two social wild cards.

Chapter 4, Session 10 (9–10 October 1814) — she offered to go upriver. At the compound council (Compound Council 9 October) she offered to accompany Adrien to Chandernagore as guide and translator, since she speaks the language, and the offer opened a discussion of propriety at the table. (Keeper decision pending, reviewed 2026-09-03: the players have not settled it.) The gmassistant export records her as “Elizabeth Ashworth”; this file is the canonical name.

Chapter 4, Session 11 (11 October 1814) — the homecoming, played. The homecoming finally ran: Adrien escorted her, with Pratap alongside as translator and fixer. She knelt in the mud before her mother and explained her journey and her vengeance in Hindi, the killing itself left out of Pratap’s translation for Adrien. Sarala relented and fed them; Malati and Nikhil Dasi arrived after and were unmoved, exactly as expected. Pratap left money for the family on her behalf as they left. The boats were not asked for.

The same day she took Adrien riding and picnicking on the Hooghly, gave him a sketchbook and pencils, and sent him off to sketch an adjutant stork and a river dolphin while she laid out the meal. Over Camembert, ham and wine they traded histories — her Sutanuti childhood and hard transition to England, his family’s exile in the Terror — before riding back to dress for the Governor’s Ball. The marriage question moved without either of them naming it.
