Description
Late twenties, Company service, and drinking his way east. Bitter in the particular way of a young man who has worked out that the institution he joined is not what it advertised and has not yet worked out what to do with that information except resent it loudly at people who cannot leave.
His anger at Gerald Hewitt is visible from the far end of the caravan. He does nothing with it whatsoever.
Background
His mentor’s career was destroyed by Hewitt. Pelham watched it happen, understood exactly what he was watching, and was then informed by Hewitt personally that the man had brought it on himself. He has been carrying that for a while and it has not improved with keeping.
Motivations
He wants somebody to agree with him. That is genuinely all of it. He wants one other person on this road to say out loud that Gerald Hewitt is a disgrace, and nobody will, because everybody has to work with the man.

Outcome (Session 6)
His hatred of Hewitt ran loud for the whole crossing. He told anyone near the fire that Hewitt had ruined his mentor’s career, and supplied the party a full drunken account of the man’s Company reputation for free. When the body was found he was the loudest voice in the courtyard, accusing Rajan of the murder to pull suspicion off himself. At Ashby’s confession the fight went out of him and he looked visibly unburdened, a man who had wanted somebody guilty for two days and could finally stop wanting it. He goes on to Calcutta, unredeemed and unpunished, exactly as designed.
