Wadi al Tih Murder

Summary

On the storm-bound night of 21–22 September 1814, the East India Company factor Gerald Hewitt was strangled in his alcove at the Wadi al Tih caravanserai, in a room made to look locked from the inside. The killer was Elizabeth Ashby, travelling as a widow, who had spent fifteen years planning it. The investigators broke the locked-room contrivance, traced the opium and the silk cord to Ashby, and heard her confess to avenging a father Hewitt had ruined in Calcutta. Given the choice of what to do with her, they released her and invited her to travel on with them.

Context

Two days out of Cairo on the Suez overland road, with no canal and no law between the wells, the caravan of master Hassan al Rashidi took shelter from a sandstorm behind the ten-foot walls of the Wadi al Tih caravanserai. The gate was buried in sand and the suspect pool sealed to the travellers within. There was no Mythos anywhere near it: pure human horror, and a preview of the East India Company machine the party is sailing toward in Calcutta.

The Killing

Elizabeth Ashby dosed Hewitt’s evening tea with an opium tincture bought in the Cairo bazaar, waited for it to take hold, entered his alcove, and strangled him from behind with a thin silk cord while he lay face-down and deeply asleep. To leave, she staged the lock: a thread tied round the key’s bow, fed back through the keyhole from outside to draw the key into the mechanism, making the room appear locked from within. A short length of that thread snapped off and stayed caught in the lock. It was her only mistake in fifteen years.

The Investigation

The solve was a genuine collaboration across the table:

• Katherine Ward coaxed the key out from the corridor side with a slip of paper, and had already placed the Indian-English accent under Ashby’s widow’s voice at the night camp.
• Nathaniel Holt read the ligature on the body and the snapped black thread on the key, and deduced the locked-room method.
• Georgiana Wentworth found the too-small footprints in the blown sand, identified the opium residue, and established with Abu Yusef that no legal authority existed to take the case.
• Freddy Cavendish reached Tariq, the shy camel boy who would speak to no one with a title, and drew out the account of a woman bringing tea to Hewitt’s room and discarding a bottle near the well.
• Adrien de Montferrand confirmed the strangulation on the body (and, prodding for more, made the corpse belch and sit upright).

James Pelham tried to hang it on Rajan, the servant, and the caravan’s mob agreed instantly. The investigators ran an investigation instead.

Outcome & Consequences

• Hewitt is dead. The victim earned it across two days and died on the third night.
• Ashby confessed and walked. She told them about her father, the indigo, the bankruptcy, and the death, asked for nothing, and handed over the cord. The party released her and welcomed her onward to Calcutta — she is now a recurring party-adjacent NPC and a loaded thread pointed at Ashworth in the Calcutta arc.
• Rajan cleared and left behind. The mob’s wrongful suspect was exonerated; Freddy Cavendish paid Abu Yusef in Spanish silver to dispose of the body and to keep and care for Rajan, who stayed at the wadi when the caravan moved on.
• Class friction surfaced. In the middle of it, Thomas Wyndham pulled rank on Nathaniel Holt over respect to the Wentworth sisters; Holt backed down, and the resentment is now live.
• The caravan dug out the gate and resumed toward Suez.
