Background

Thomas Wyndham is a British infantry officer from London. He is NOT from Vienna and has no family residence in the city — he is a military officer stationed there.

Early Campaign History (reconciled October 2026)

In Paris, Emma persuaded Thomas to abandon his intended leave in England and accompany the investigators. He hoped to marry her.

Emma and Thomas overheard Goupil discussing the secret ritual with masked guests on a balcony. Elsewhere at the soirée, Georgiana recognised the Greek myths Goupil was passing off as his own exploits. The investigators followed two masked guests in an attempt to steal their ritual tokens.

Thomas sweet-talked Victoire Lenoir while Marina tried and failed to lift her token. Emma then quarrelled with Thomas over his talking to another woman, creating a distraction so that he could try to take it himself.

Thomas and Adrien were seriously wounded during the hospital assault, one shot and the other stabbed. Someone seized the remaining nurse in a surgical theatre near the veterans’ gunfight and compelled her to treat them.

The Sternberg Rivalry

Thomas is increasingly volatile due to Graf Sternberg’s formal romantic pursuit of Emma. Sternberg’s advances and social status are pushing Thomas toward issuing a formal duel challenge — a potential complication that could:

• Divide party attention during critical operations
• Remove Thomas from the field for extended periods
• Create diplomatic incidents (British officer vs. Austrian nobility)
• Force the party to choose sides or intervene

Masquerade

Session 8 Update — Grand Masquerade (Night of August 8, 1814)

Thomas attended the Grand Masquerade with the party. Two events define his Session 8:

The Sternberg Challenge — Accepted

When Graf Maximilian von Sternberg arrived drunk and demanded a dance from Emma, then loudly insulted Varrio for refusing on her behalf, Varrio answered with a closed fist to Sternberg’s mouth in front of perhaps a hundred witnesses. Sternberg recovered, drew himself up, and issued a formal duel challenge — “Tomorrow at dawn, outside the Linienwall gates. Sabres.”

Wyndham accepted the challenge on Varrio’s behalf, with delight. He then asked Varrio to second him. The duel is set for dawn, August 9, sabres, outside the Linienwall gates. (See the Sternberg duel for the full subplot history; this is the moment the long-running rivalry collapses into actual blade work.)

This is Wyndham unfiltered — the protective devotion he has been holding back through six sessions has finally found a target who is socially permissible to fight. His “delight” at accepting is canon: he wants this.

The Wächter Attack — Bulwark of the Corridor Cluster

When the first Wächter dropped through the stained-glass window and the ballroom collapsed into panic, Wyndham positioned himself as the physical bulwark of the corridor cluster — shoving through the panicking crowd to clear a path for Emma and the freshly-extracted Anna toward the servants’ corridor exit. He is a trained sabre-wielding cavalry officer in a room where most of the men present are in evening dress and most of the women are in heels; the corridor cluster’s survival depends substantially on his ability to keep the crowd off them.

Session 9 Update — Survived the Night (Night of 8 August into Dawn of 9 August 1814)

Thomas survived. He leapt from the broken ballroom window onto the port-cochère roof in a crouch and turned to help others — but Fräulein Lindqvist jumped too hard and sailed past him at an angle. He lunged, caught her by the arm and dress, and ended up flattened on the roof with the singer dangling above a ten-foot drop to the Spiegelgasse below. He pulled her to safety. In the alleyway, he pushed Anna behind him and raised a stone to defend her before the Wächter was recalled by Adler’s tuning fork. He was picked up with Anna during the carriage flight.

At Thaliastraße 12, Thomas refused to leave Emma’s side. She sustained a major knife wound under the arm from Adler during the fork scramble. Thomas is at her bedside and will not move until a doctor arrives.

Session 11 Update — The Duel Won (Dawn, 10 August 1814)

The duel was rescheduled in Session 10 (Varrio charmed Sternberg over Tokaji) to dawn on 10 August, pistols, Linienwallgasse. Thomas appeared. Sternberg appeared. The duel was fought.

• Pistol exchange: Thomas missed. Sternberg’s pistol misfired (wet pan, damp morning conditions). Neither man hit.
• Weapon switch: Varrio persuaded both seconds to switch to sabers (Hard Charm success).
• Sabre exchange: Both men at Fighting (Sword) 70%. Thomas anticipated Sternberg’s riposte, twisted under the blade, drove saber into armpit and chest. Collapsed lung. Sternberg hospitalized.
• The kiss: Thomas kissed Emma on the duelling ground. She kissed him back. Four sessions of romantic tension resolved in a single gesture.

Session 11 Update — Full Record (9–10 August 1814)

The Duel (Dawn, 10 August): Fought at Linienwallgasse, beyond the Linienwall gates. Pistol exchange: Thomas missed, Sternberg’s pistol suffered a wet pan misfire (not a critical failure roll — the powder failed to catch in the damp morning air). Varrio persuaded both seconds to switch to sabers. Thomas anticipated Sternberg’s riposte, twisted under the blade, and drove his saber into Sternberg’s armpit and deep into his chest. Collapsed lung. Sternberg was loaded into a carriage and driven to hospital. Thomas kissed Emma on the duelling ground. She kissed him back.

The Black Bear Raid (Evening, 10 August): Thomas joined Freddy and Adrien to raid the Black Bear on Taborstraße. Thomas kicked the door in. During the fight, Werner grabbed Thomas’s foot and yanked him off his feet. Thomas recovered and killed Klaus — ran him through with his saber when Klaus staggered up from the cot with a knife.

Safehouse Celebration: Thomas returned to Thaliastraße 12 and regaled Adrien and Freddy with a blow-by-blow account of his duel victory. In high spirits, combat-ready, and fully resolved.

Session 13 Update — Wächter Aftermath; University Assault (Evening 11 August into Pre-dawn 12 August 1814)

After the Wächter Attack

When the Wächter at the Heuriger was killed and the fire extinguished, Thomas helped Emma out from under the table where she had taken cover. He settled her on the parlour sofa with her feet in his lap — a quiet, instinctive act of care in the aftermath of violence.

University Assault — Main Team

Thomas is on the main assault team entering Herzfeld’s side of the University. During the approach, when the team encountered student guards outside Herzfeld’s office, Thomas charged in and knocked one unconscious with a single punch. No hesitation, no wasted motion.

Session 5 (Chapter 4) Update — The Cairo Interlude (16–20 September 1814)

Travelling with the party through the Cairo breathing-space. As Keeper NPC:

• Stopped Emma from joining the professional dancers in the festival streets during Eid.
• Trekked to Bulaq with Holt to secure the twenty oiled water skins for the desert crossing.
• Was chased from the inn courtyard fountain by Sitt Nafisa, who threw bread and plates.
• At Giza, traded a cufflink to a guide for a chair and parasol for Emma, then gave her the silver anklet (bells and charms) he had held since Alexandria and banked twice for this specific sky.

The romance with Emma deepened over the interlude, neither party naming it.

Outcome (Session 6)

Across the desert crossing the courtship with Emma deepened without either of them naming it. He shared a blanket with her at the fire the night before the murder, and after the sandstorm he dug her buried door, and Georgiana’s, clear of the drift before either sister had risen. When Holt gave what he read as disrespect to the Wentworth sisters, Thomas squared up to him, pulled military rank, and Holt backed down seething, a class friction now live and unresolved between the aristocratic order and the jumped-up naval lieutenant. His protective instinct kept its shape throughout: had anyone in the courtyard moved on Rajan, the hand would have gone to the St George necklace, and he would have stood between.

Outcome (Session 7) — Suez, the passage, and Socotra

The duel on deck. Somewhere in the Indian Ocean he and Holt squared off on the Shah Alam’s deck for a friendly bout — his sabre against Holt’s cutlass, with a gentleman’s wager attached: the loser buys the drinks on the first night ashore and owes an apology to the ladies. After a spirited exchange Thomas slipped inside Holt’s guard, caught his blade, and sent the cutlass clattering to the planks. He stepped back, said “Well thought, sir. Shall we continue, or do you want to stop?” — and was cut off by Ismail’s hullabaloo as Socotra came up off the port bow.

This is the Session 6 class friction converted into something a gentleman can do about it. He won, he was gracious about winning, and the debt he collected is a round of drinks and an apology to the Wentworth sisters — the exact grievance he pulled rank over at the wadi, now settled on terms Holt can pay. Whether either of them regards the matter as closed is unstated.

Socotra. He volunteered for the water run as the plan expected, questioned the lascars at the spring with Emma when Jumman went missing, and went into the caves through the lower tunnel. In the cocoon chamber he stood beneath the human pyramid and caught Jumman’s body as Emma cut the boy free, lowering him safely to the cave floor.

He was in the grab pool as the default target and the dice never needed him — Freddy was taken instead. The Emma-loses-Thomas beat is unspent and still available.

In Play

Chapter 4, Session 9 (9 October 1814) — separated from Emma by the seating plan. He handed Emma into the carriage at St John’s, shielding her from the monsoon mud, and spent the afternoon at the Cavendish Compound frustrated that the rain prevented target practice, jokingly challenging her to a duel.

At Garden Reach Harriet Courtney paired him with Arabella Fitch for the procession into dinner rather than with Emma, and he was visibly displeased in front of the room. The unnamed courtship continues.

Chapter 4, Session 10 (9–10 October 1814) — thrown, trampled, and the winner. Paired with Miss Fitch at dinner by Harriet. On Monday morning he rode Pratap Singh’s steeplechase on The Maidan, collided with Adrien at the fences and went down under the horses, battered and bruised with no lasting wound recorded. He then won the tilting outright after three rounds against Adrien, Freddy and Sophia Surlish, took the Cave a Liqueur as his prize, and opened the brandy on the spot for the crowd (Maidan Steeplechase and Tilts).

Chapter 4, Session 11 (10 October 1814) — Bara Bazaar on foot, and a rapport over drinks. After Emma abandoned the carriage, he walked alongside her to the Bara Bazaar on foot, surveying the British-built center of Calcutta with evident pride while she remained unimpressed. That evening at Hugh’s gathering he struck up an immediate, lively rapport with Captain George Drury, swapping military stories as the drinks flowed and learning of Colonel Blackwood as the man to approach for engineering assignments at Baranagar.

Campaign Log

• Session 12 - The Governor’s Ball — Claimed the first and last dances on Emma’s card, dismissing Glennie as “a little squid”; danced a showpiece with her, Adrien and Elizabeth that drew the room’s attention. Defended Emma when Surlish dismissed her interest in the indigo syndicate as “men’s work.” The next day, at the burial ground on Circular Road with Emma and Georgiana, noted grimly that under English law stealing a shroud is theft, but a corpse belongs to no one.
• Session 13 - Sundry Fittings — Rode with the party to the Zorab sale and to Dr Venn’s bungalow. Fired his pistol into the shoulder joint of the Mi-Go on the carriage roof, which failed to slow it, and broke up the wrecked carriage to make torches for the dark house.
• Session 14 - A Morning of Manners and Monstrosities — on Mullick’s godown tour he went down with Georgiana to Surlish’s floor as her guard, and made a distraction while she took a sample of the residue. He went upriver with the boat.
• Session 15 - The River of Rites and Ruin — upriver with the party; shared his French brandy with Pratap at Ghosh’s house, tried to resist the servants at dinner, and gave up the rest of the brandy at the dak bungalow.
