A hammered silver pendant from a Coptic silversmith’s tray in the Alexandria souk: the soldier saint spearing a dragon, the relief worn smooth with age and handling. Emma bought it as a protective gift alongside the scarab pin she kept for herself, intending it for Thomas from the outset.

History

Purchased by Emma during the Alexandria souk shopping trip (Chapter 4, Session 4). She held onto it rather than presenting it immediately, and gave it to Thomas that first night in Rashid, in the well-appointed brick house on the river, pressing it into his hands and telling him it was for his protection.

Thomas turned it over for a long moment before answering — his hands, by the table’s account, “suddenly seeming thick and clumsy” — and said quietly that he had had men behind him his whole career, and men beside him, but never anything over him, and that he would not take it off. The table’s Memorable Moments log records the line verbatim:

“I’ve had men behind me my whole career. Men beside me. Never anything over me. I’ll not take it off.” — Thomas Wyndham

This is a significant beat in the Emma/Thomas thread: it followed Thomas’s own earlier, more awkward gift to Emma that same session — a beaded veil, presented tongue-tied in the courtyard of the Locanda del Leone — and reads as the pair’s clearest mutual acknowledgment of feeling to date. Thomas is a Keeper NPC (player characters); this necklace is now his signature worn object and should be treated as a fixed point of characterisation going forward — he does not remove it.
