Scarab Pin

Blue Faience Scarab Pin

Current Holder: Emma Wentworth

Origin: Alexandria souk, Chapter 4 Session 4

Description

A genuinely ancient-looking Egyptian artefact — a blue faience scarab — mounted as a pin. The souk seller claimed it older than Alexander the Great; whether that claim is true or merely good salesmanship is untested. Emma found it while searching the market stalls for something with Isis or a scarab, intending it as a protective token.

Properties

  • Blue faience construction, antique in appearance and workmanship.
  • Mounted for wear as a pin at the throat.
  • Purchased at asking price — the ladies bypassed the local custom of haggling entirely.

History

Bought by Emma during the Alexandria souk shopping trip (Chapter 4, Session 4), alongside the St. George necklace she intended as a gift for Thomas. Emma kept the scarab for herself and wears it at her own throat. Acquired in the same scene as the prayer scroll cylinders Georgiana and Katherine commissioned — the whole party turning, independently, to protective charms before the journey up the Nile.
