The great market of Calcutta and the commercial heart of the Indian city, off Chitpur Road north of Lal Dighi. Textiles, spices, metalwork, grain, and money. Marwari and Bengali trading houses operate here on a scale that rivals anything in White Town and on terms the Company does not set.

The Senses
- Smell. Cardamom, asafoetida, raw cotton, jute, hot ghee, and under it the dense animal warmth of a covered market.
- Sound. A wall of it. Bargaining in four languages, brass being worked, handcarts, and somebody counting coin very fast.
- Colour. Bolts of cloth stacked to the ceiling in every colour there is, and above them the brown gloom of awnings and matting roofs.
