Description
A wet, crowded market street within Barabazar, heaped with fish and pungent with it, one of the lanes that grow narrower and more chaotic the further into the market a traveller goes. Local children swarm passersby here, begging as they pass.
Notable Features
- The begging children. A swarm pressed in from all sides on the Wentworth sisters’ passage through, until Georgiana Wentworth extended her silver-webbed hand toward them.
- A reaction unlike anything the shopping trip had produced elsewhere. The children fell back immediately, calling out blessings in Hindi, and followed the party afterward at a respectful distance for the rest of the journey, as though in the presence of something sacred.
- On the route between Basak and Nephew’s and Iron Lane — the lanes grow narrower and wetter in that direction.
