Description
A well-established shop within Barabazar, distinguished from its neighbours by a proper wooden roof rather than tenting, standing on a wide lane frequented by East India Company officers. Basak greets custom in clear, well-spoken English and lays out gleaming, bejeweled tiger claws (bagh nakh) and ornate katars for browsing.
The weapons on display are decorative rather than functional — intended for white buyers who do not know better, not for anyone with a serious use for a blade.
Notable Features
- The display stock is inferior. Georgiana Wentworth picked up a tiger claw and bent its blade between her fingers, exposing the trinkets for what they were.
- Basak’s honesty once caught out. Visibly embarrassed at being caught selling tourist pieces, Basak admitted the truth rather than argue the point, and directed the sisters to a real armorer: Sheikh Karim Bakhsh on Iron Lane.
- A wide, respectable lane by Bara Bazaar standards — this is a shop for officers passing through, not a stall a serious buyer would seek out.
