Description

Wealthy Hindu merchant of the banian class, the Indian brokers who interface between European commerce and Indian markets. Courteous, shrewd, immaculately dressed in a blend of Indian and European fashion. Speaks perfect English with Bengali cadence. Generous in a way that creates networks of obligation. His firm handles warehousing, river transport, and export brokerage. He sits on charitable boards alongside British officials, and his carriage is drawn by zebras, because a banian of the first rank can afford a spectacle no European in Bengal can match.

Calcutta will tell you he is not a bad man — a community pillar doing what community pillars do: maintaining temples, supporting institutions, protecting commercial relationships.

Background

One of Calcutta’s most respected Indian merchants, and the leading figure of the merchant consortium behind the godown syndicate on The Strand — the warehouses that Company opium, including Hugh’s, must pass through. His charity is real and public: a hospital, schools, a bathing ghat, flood relief, a dispensary. Meg calls him “the most decent man in Calcutta’s merchant world,” and all Calcutta agrees with her.

Chapter 4, Session 9 (9 October 1814) — present, and entirely unseen. He attended Ashworth’s dinner at Garden Reach and the party never registered him. What they did register was his carriage among the others waiting outside: the one drawn by zebras. Nobody asked whose it was.

The zebras are the whole man in one image. A banian of the first rank can afford a spectacle no European in Bengal can match, and he uses it, and the people who matter already know exactly whose carriage that is. See Ashworth Dinner Garden Reach.

Chapter 4, Session 10 (9–10 October 1814) — named twice in a day, and the second time it was about their money. In the Garden Reach drawing room Diana named him as the host of the most lavish nautch in Calcutta and the owner of the zebra carriage. The next morning Pargeter named him, under pressure, as the man whose consortium runs the godown syndicate holding the Wentworth capital (Pargeter Interview Clive Street). The party now has his name attached to their own money.

Chapter 4, Session 11 (11 October 1814) — met at last, in his own carriage. Arrived at Hugh’s evening gathering in the zebra carriage, bearing a trunk of Indian liquors and sweets. Hugh introduced him to Georgiana and Emma, who charmed him over his zebras and his fashion, and he was plainly delighted. Hugh then told the sisters, in front of him, that Mullick runs the GoDown Syndicate’s warehouses for the opium trade, and that Hawthorne Surlish is a partner in it. The sisters pressed the opening and secured an invitation to tour the warehouses on Thursday, and Mullick separately offered to host a Nautch party for the group in the coming week. He departed in high spirits, unbothered by any of it — publicly, none of this costs him anything.

• Session 12 - The Governor’s Ball — Greeted the Wentworth sisters warmly at the ball and admired their fashions; agreed at Emma’s request to keep Surlish away from Thursday’s godown tour. Sent a basket of out-of-season mangoes to the Cavendish Compound on Wednesday morning by a harkara in his livery.
• Session 14 - A Morning of Manners and Monstrosities — showed the Misses Wentworth the syndicate’s godowns on The Strand and took Emma through the ledgers: remittances stopped two years ago for reinvestment. When he found the party on Surlish’s floor below, he hurried them out.
