What Happened

The morning post brought the Gazette’s report of a drowned man found with fingers grown together as though webbed, a sealed letter for Freddy closed with a plain red wafer, and a basket of out-of-season mangoes from Mullick. Young Freddy crawled under the table and grabbed Emma’s ankle, ringing her anklet bells, before being distracted with a mango.

Major Renwick arrived as promised. Once introductions and food were done, Freddy set about convincing his family the danger was real: a winged creature crawling down a building and bursting through a window, and Renwick’s own father’s stories of a ghoul-summoning instrument that disrupted a funeral. The rest of the party backed him and, one by one, showed their scars — including a hand and arm visibly transforming, shimmering and webbing, matching the men from the carriage line the night before.

Meg, five months pregnant, clutched her belly and went pale, then retired to her room faint. Hugh fell into a panic. Renwick went quiet and serious and said simply that he was in.

The servants were dismissed and the party coordinated the day: Freddy to seek Ashworth over keeping Renwick out of the Nepal posting; Emma, Georgiana and Thomas to the burial ground on Circular Road; Katherine, Elizabeth and Adrien to find Ram Mohan Roy; Pratap Singh to Fort William to arrange the compound’s security.

Why It Matters

Hugh and Meg now know, or half-know, what the party is facing, and the knowledge has already cost them: Meg faint, Hugh panicked. Renwick is recruited. The day’s four-way split sets up the burial ground, Roy’s account, Ashworth’s letter and the Fort William sepoys, all in the same session.
