Ramkanta Sett

Role Banian and registrar to the merchant consortium's godown syndicate Nationality Indian (Bengali) Status alive Age 66
Sixty-six.

Description

Sixty-six. Small, spectacled, exquisitely courteous, and so unremarkable that people who have dealt with him for twenty years cannot describe him afterwards.

He is the syndicate’s banian and registrar. He keeps the subscription list. He proposes new subscribers to the partners, who approve them, because Sett’s recommendations have never once gone wrong. He remembers every figure without consulting a book and consults the book anyway, because it is correct to.

In Play

Chapter 4, Session 11 (11 October 1814) — named, not met. Freddy used his Board of Control auditing authority at the Writers Building, with Edmund Courtney’s cooperation, to pull the godown syndicate’s ledgers. A charitable-disbursements line — an annual subscription to the temple at Baranagar running since 1791 — led him to the same predatory pattern across five absentee European accounts (see Absentee Account Pattern), every one of them proposed to the partners in Sett’s own hand. The party now has his name and his role as registrar; they have not yet met him.
