She made it with open eyes, thinking she could manage any marriage with enough intelligence and goodwill. She was wrong. Intelligence and goodwill are exactly the tools Surlish knows how to neutralise.

Over three years Surlish made her understand that she is a feature of his household. Every preference indulged in a way that made it feel trivial. Every pushback absorbed with patient amusement that made it feel childish. He didn’t break her spirit. He tried to make it irrelevant. The attempt has left her furious.

Chapter 4, Session 8 (9 October 1814) — first sighting, no contact. At Sunday service in St John’s she turned in her pew and waved warmly at Meg Cavendish — the only warmth offered to the party by a stranger that morning. Her husband’s profile turned toward her; she went still, and faced forward for the rest of the service.

The whole party watched it happen. It is the first evidence any of them has that the Surlish household runs the way it does, and it was free.

Chapter 4, Session 9 (9 October 1814) — silenced in public a second time, with the whole party watching. She was in the churchyard at St John’s on her husband’s arm and managed a smile at Freddy and no more before Surlish took her by the arm and frog-marched her away. The party saw her chafe under it.

She did not attend the Magistrate’s dinner; the Surlish house declined within the hour of the invitation arriving.

Chapter 4, Session 9 — corroborated from inside the household. At the Magistrate’s dinner, Percy Cartwright was asked whether Surlish treats him well and answered “better than he treats his wife, worse than he treats his dog.” He was drunk, he was not thinking about what he was saying, and he named the marriage without being asked about it. Surlish’s cruelty to his wife is now established from a witness inside his own operation, spoken in front of Katherine and the table. See Ashworth Dinner Garden Reach.

Chapter 4, Session 10 (9–10 October 1814) — the first encounter, on horseback. She rode up on The Maidan on Monday morning while the gentlemen were picking themselves out of the fences, watched with amusement, and accepted an invitation into the tilting. In the first pass she rang her own hoop and carried on to take the one Freddy had just missed, handing it back to him with a smile. She conceded to Thomas after three rounds and lingered over the brandy with Freddy, her interest rather more than conversational (Maidan Steeplechase and Tilts). When Pratap Singh privately warned her that her husband might not like her taking part, she dismissed it with the confidence of long practice. Names were exchanged this time.

Chapter 4, Session 11 (10 October 1814) — a fan, at the tournament’s end. Freddy tried his charm on her as the equestrian tournament broke up. She answered with a fan gesture before being whisked away by servants, giving him no chance to ask what it meant. Georgiana’s knowledge of fan language let the party decipher it afterward, over lunch, as a warning that they are being watched, paired with a signal to wait. Whether this is Sophia extending her own quiet rebellion toward the party, or something she was directed to convey, is not yet established — the Keeper should decide before she is used again.

• Session 12 - The Governor’s Ball — Dropped a dark, silky glove during the ball; Freddy picked it up and tucked it into his handkerchief pocket. Sent home alone in one carriage after the Governor General departed, while her husband took a second carriage toward the river.
• Session 14 - A Morning of Manners and Monstrosities — off-screen. Freddy has found and read her note, and stays in Calcutta for Friday, when her husband collects her from Meg’s.
• Session 15 - The River of Rites and Ruin — came to dinner at the Cavendish compound; told Freddy and Meg about her husband’s Tuesday nights and the labourer on the charpoy, and that she had torn a page from his book; accepted Meg’s sanctuary and refused to go home with him.
