A walled house in a side lane off Clive Street, a short walk from the godowns on the Strand.
Description
A walled house in a side lane off Clive Street, a short walk from the godowns on the Strand. Two storeys, flat-roofed behind a parapet, with deep verandahs on both floors and green jhilmil shutters folded back for the night air. A durwan sits by the gate on the lane; a second, narrower gate opens on the back lane for water and deliveries.
What’s Here
- The gate on the lane: the durwan’s place, and the only door a caller uses.
- The back lane: the servants’ gate, for the bheestie and the tradesmen.
- The yard: the stables, with the carriage and horses, and the servants’ quarters.
- The outside stair: from the yard up to the upper back verandah.
- The study: at the back of the upper floor, over the yard; its door locked.
