Surlish House Burglary
Outcome: Katherine took Surlish's pocket-book and the docket of seven petitions from his study unseen
Participants
- Katherine Ward — broke in and took the documents
- Sophia Surlish — gave Katherine the layout and routine of the house
- Freddy Cavendish — kept Surlish occupied at the Cavendish compound
- Anne Pelham — set the job
What Happened
- While Surlish dined at the Cavendish Compound, Katherine, who had charmed the layout and routine of the house out of Sophia, slipped away by palanquin to Clive Street.
- The servants’ gate at the back of Surlish House was unlocked. Her toe caught something that clanged across the yard, and two servants came out with candles and followed her footprints; she hid buried in the stable hay until they went back to bed.
- She climbed the outside stairs to the upper veranda, picked the lock of Surlish’s private study, and searched it. She came away with his calf-bound pocket-book, one page already torn out, and a docket of seven legal petitions tied with red tape: the documents Lady Anne had sent her to find.
- Her palanquin came back to the compound gates as two heavy thumps landed on the roof.
Why It Matters
- The party holds Surlish’s private record and the petitions Lady Anne wants.
- Surlish does not yet know they are gone.
