Description
Cairo’s port, and the place every traveller coming down from Rashid or up from the Delta actually arrives. The party’s dahabeah nosed in here on 16 September 1814 and they walked inland through the Muski’s lanes to the blue door of the Auberge.
It is a mile of mud bank doing business with itself, and it has been doing it for four hundred years. Dahabeahs and djerms lie three deep at the landing. Grain comes down from the Said and gets argued over. Lateen yards forty feet long lie across trestles while men walk their length with adzes, taking off shavings so thin they curl in the air before they land.
The boatyards are the part worth stopping for, and only one member of the party can see why. The hulls going up on the bank have no frames in them. The planks go on first, edge-joined, and the shape comes out of the planking rather than being imposed on it by a skeleton, and then the whole thing swells tight the first time it goes in the water. There are no drawings anywhere. The men building these boats are working from a tradition that predates every ship in the Royal Navy by roughly three thousand years, and the rig they hang on it will go to windward in a way a square-rigger simply cannot.

- The landing — where the party arrived. Crowded, shallow, and permanently full.
- The boatyards — shell-first construction. No frames, no drawings, edge-joined planking, hot caulk. Adzes and a great deal of shouting.
- The lateen rig — the thing a Royal Navy officer would actually stop and stare at.
- The grain trade — the Said’s harvest comes downriver here and the arguing about it never stops.
- The last water. For a party about to cross 84 miles of gravel to Suez, Bulaq is the final working waterfront until the Red Sea.
Session Appearances
Session 5 (Cairo, 16–20 Sept 1814): The party’s water-procurement site. A near-toothless man oversees a foot-pedal Nile water-filtration rig — a jar dipped into the river, the water drawn up through many layers of cloth into barrels. Holt and Thomas bought twenty water skins here, oiled against desert cracking, for delivery to the caravan.
