Description
An Ottoman province governed at arm’s length from Constantinople, and the overland link in the party’s passage from Europe to Calcutta. The party made landfall at Alexandria on 9 September 1814 after four days out of Trieste aboard La Speranza — the first ground they had walked outside Europe. From there the route runs by sea to the Nile’s western mouth, upriver through Rashid to Cairo, and then east across the desert road toward Suez by way of Wadi al Tih.
The country reads as two deserts either side of one green river. Heat, dust, and glare dominate the coast and the capital alike; the Nile valley is abruptly lush by contrast. Ottoman authority is transactional — customs, permits, and passage are negotiated in coin rather than argument.

Alexandria Overview
Alexandria received the party on 9 September 1814, four days after leaving Trieste — brown and pale and ancient above a harbour thick with refuse and noise, a smell of dust and animal and cooking fat that was nothing like Europe.
Cairo
A city of a thousand minarets and the citadel standing over it on its ridge, palm groves green along both banks of the Nile, and — across the desert haze — the pyramids themselves, holding pale and exact against the sky.
Rashid
Also known as Rosetta, Rashid is a lush, green city at the Nile's western mouth — a striking contrast to Alexandria's dust and glare.
Suez
The caravan road tops a low gravel ridge and the desert simply stops.
The Nile River
A wide, brown waterway lined with date palms, orange groves, and mudbrick villages the same colour as the riverbank.
Wadi al Tih
