Description
Twenty-six, and the same mixed parentage as her elder sister — but where Elizabeth was taught to sand it off, Malati never was. She is river-brown, direct, and impatient, and she speaks Bengali first and English second with no apology in either.
She has worked her uncle’s boats since she was eleven. She reads the Hooghly the way a sailor reads a coast: the sandbars that move every monsoon, the bore tide, which ghat is watched and which is not, and which stretch of bank between Calcutta and Baranagar can be reached at night without passing a Company post.
Background
She was four when her father died and the English relations came. They took her sister, who could pass, and did not take her. She has never entirely decided whether that was a theft or an escape, and has had twenty-two years to not decide it.
She married into the boat families at nineteen and the marriage is a working partnership. She is the one who talks to the European factors, because she is the one who can.

In Play
Chapter 4, Session 11 (11 October 1814) — arrived, unmoved. Came to her mother’s home with Nikhil after Elizabeth’s reunion with Sarala was already under way. Showed little sympathy for the tale of vengeance, exactly as her file anticipated — twenty-two years of grievance did not resolve in one afternoon. Not asked for the boats and did not offer them; she remains the party’s unclaimed route to the river for the Kali Puja climax.
