Motivations
Nothing, which is the problem. He is not suicidal and he is not trying to recover. He wants company that does not expect him to be cheerful.

Marcus Hale is drinking himself to death at a socially acceptable pace. Every woman in Calcutta wants to save him, which is exactly the wrong instinct. He doesn’t want saving.
