The richest Frenchman in Chandernagore and the one with most to lose.
Overview
The richest Frenchman in Chandernagore and the one with most to lose. He did business through the war years with whoever would pay, and the Strand says he drank the Emperor’s health every year on the fifteenth of August. He is very polite to the Vicomte and watches him like a man pricing a cargo.
Appearance & Manner
Lean and brown, well dressed in English cloth, with a sailor’s rolling walk and a merchant’s soft hands. He speaks fluent English with a Mauritian lilt and changes language whenever it suits him.
History
Came out from Lorient as a young supercargo in the 1780s, stayed, married a Chandernagore girl, and prospered under the British by buying the houses of French families who left.
