Overview

Fourvière is a Roman amphitheatre located in Lyon, representing one of the city’s most significant archaeological sites. Its ancient stone and acoustical properties have made it a target for the Aeternum Choir, which has hidden the sealed chamber of Roman Temple Aeternox beneath its structure.

Location & Geography

  • Location: Lyon’s Roman quarter
  • Historical Status: Ancient Roman ruins, partially excavated
  • Current Status: Open to scholars and antiquarians; archaeological work ongoing or halted pending conservation

Architecture

Above Ground

  • Tiered Seating: Remaining stone blocks and terraces of the amphitheatre
  • Central Performance Area: Where ancient Romans held spectacles and performances
  • Surrounding Ruins: Walls, archways, and structural remnants
  • Atmosphere: Ancient, resonant; sound carries strangely through the remaining chambers

Below Ground

  • Catacombs and Passages: Complex subterranean network beneath and around the amphitheatre
  • Roman Vaults: Ancient storage and ceremonial chambers
  • Hidden Temple Entrance: Access to Roman Temple Aeternox through sealed passages

Significance to the Choir

The Choir has chosen Fourvière because:

  • Its ancient acoustic properties enhance harmonic rituals
  • Its subterranean structure provides natural concealment
  • Its remote chambers are isolated from the modern city
  • Its archaeological status provides some protection (being an important site, it is not randomly developed or destroyed)

Role in Campaign

Fourvière is:

  • A landmark the investigators must navigate to find the ritual site
  • An archaeological puzzle to solve (finding the hidden temple)
  • A source of historical and architectural clues
  • A potential confrontation site if the Choir is discovered using it

Access

  • Above Ground: Open to the public and scholars
  • Below Ground: Restricted; requires knowledge of entrances or forced access
  • Hidden Temple: Sealed; requires either knowledge of the seal mechanism or forced entry

Campaign History

Chapter 2 — Lyon

The investigators discovered the Roman temple (“Perform” on their tunnel map) during their first tunnel expedition. This confirmed Savarin’s intended ritual site. However, the Fourvière ritual never took place — the investigators destroyed Savarin’s cell before August 15 through the Orphans Hospital Raid and Silkweavers Guild Assault. Savarin was killed in the tunnels and the ritual was prevented entirely.
