Description

The district in Cairo where European merchants and consular agents reside — a small enclave of familiar faces set inside a much larger, foreign city. European faces are ordinary here, drawing none of the attention they might elsewhere in Cairo. The quarter closes its gates nightly, with watchmen carrying lanterns making their rounds after dark — a marker of both its self-contained order and the city’s own division between districts. The Auberge du Muski sits just beyond its edge, three streets into the neighbouring Muski.

Notable Features

  • Nightly gate closures — the quarter shuts itself off after dark, patrolled by watchmen with lanterns.
  • European faces are ordinary here — a contrast with the rest of Cairo, where the party draws more notice.
  • Home ground for the resident merchant and consular community — the counterpart, in Cairo, to Alexandria’s Frank quarter around the Locanda del Leone.

Connections

  • Cairo — the city.
  • The Muski — adjacent district; the market lane runs from the Frank houses toward the great bazaars.
  • Auberge du Muski — the party’s base, close by though technically within the Muski itself.
