Vienna Conservatory
Description
The Vienna Conservatory is the city’s premier music school and, publicly, the professional home of Kapellmeister Anton Adler — teacher, conductor, and, to everyone who has not yet seen behind the mask, a charming and gifted patron of young musical talent. It is also the Brotherhood of the Open Measure’s principal recruitment site: Adler’s cover identity here is how he finds, assesses, and isolates victims for the Harmonic Engine, Anna Lindqvist chief among them.
The party’s only visit on record was the afternoon of 7 August 1814, in the immediate, grief-stricken aftermath of Colonel Moreau’s assassination on the Graben and Varrio’s wounding and detention by the compromised police ([Chapter 03 Session 05 Wrap Up](…/chapters/Chapter 3 - Vienna/Session 5/chapter-03-session-05-wrap-up.html)). Emma and Georgiana slipped into a public student recital, arriving to find Anna — blonde and visibly trembling before her turn to perform — near the refreshments. They helped fix her hair, settled her nerves, and befriended her with a warmth Emma later reflected was “entirely genuine.” Anna, unguarded, spoke warmly of Adler, called herself his “special project,” named Practice Room 7 as the room where she rehearsed daily, and glowed about an “unveiling” being planned for her at the coming masquerade.
While Anna sang, Adler slipped in through a side door to watch her, his long fingers twitching in time with the music — a detail the party registered as more possessive than proud. The instant the sisters moved to approach Anna after her performance, his face went cold. He pulled her through a side door and slammed it. Emma and Georgiana followed the sound to his office and waited at the creaking door until it opened on Adler’s composed, unsurprised face. Emma tried to charm her way past him; Anna waved from somewhere inside; Adler’s smile vanished, his hand found the hilt of a knife, and he said, quietly and without theatre, “I’m afraid I must insist.” They left.
Notable Features
The Recital Hall
Where the public student recital was held on 7 August — the party’s first direct sighting of both Anna and Adler together. Open to the public, which is precisely how Emma and Georgiana were able to attend unannounced and make contact with Anna before Adler could intervene.
Practice Room 7
Anna’s named daily haunt — the room where she rehearses, and by extension a place Adler can reliably find her and control access to her. Never physically entered by the party in play, but named directly by Anna as part of her routine.
Adler’s Office
Adjoining the recital hall by a side door. The scene of the party’s most direct confrontation with Adler’s controlling behaviour: a locked door, a slammed exit, and — when Emma pressed — a half-drawn knife and a quiet threat delivered without raising his voice. This is the moment the party stopped seeing Adler as merely charming and started seeing him as dangerous.
Connections
- Anton Adler — the Conservatory is his public cover and operational base by day. His
Anton_Adlerfile’s Daily Patterns table places him here every morning: “Teaching, conducting rehearsals, talent-scouting (identifying potential victims).” That cover held through this session but was permanently burned three sessions later, at the Grand Masquerade, when he deployed the command tuning fork and summoned Wächter in front of Vienna’s aristocracy. - Anna Lindqvist — taken to the Conservatory daily by one of Adler’s men, per [Chapter 03 Session 05 Wrap Up](…/chapters/Chapter 3 - Vienna/Session 5/chapter-03-session-05-wrap-up.html). This is the location where the party first met her in person and where Adler’s grip on her movements first became visible.
- Bäckerstraße 14 — Adler’s private rooms, a separate location from the Conservatory; Anna later describes hearing screaming through the floor there during her “training” sessions, distinct from anything witnessed at the Conservatory itself.
- University of Vienna — where the Harmonic Engine is actually housed; the Conservatory is the recruitment funnel that feeds it, not the Engine’s location.
- [Chapter 03 Session 05 Wrap Up](…/chapters/Chapter 3 - Vienna/Session 5/chapter-03-session-05-wrap-up.html) — the session in which the Conservatory visit occurs, alongside Moreau’s death and Trautmannsdorff’s extraction elsewhere in the city on the same day.
