Colonel Henri Moreau

Reconstructed memorial. Moreau was the soldier the campaign reached for when it had already spent its gentlemen. Jay’s third character, dead on a Vienna boulevard.

Chapter 2 — Lyon

Colonel Henri Moreau came to the party as an ally with his own veterans at his back, and when Gus died at the Orphans’ Hospital, Jay took up Moreau and the colonel became an investigator in his own right. He brought the party something it had never had: command experience and disciplined soldiers, and both mattered at the Silkweavers’ Guild, where his veterans held the tunnel line, prepared the volley that killed Savarin the instant she showed herself, and gave the assault its military spine.

The tunnels also gave Moreau the campaign’s heaviest moment to carry. When Marina’s mind shattered at the corner and she lunged at him, Moreau grabbed her and spun her into the Chakota’s mass, and her dying explosion killed the creature and nearly killed him too. Whether that was reflex, tactics, or something he never let himself name, he survived the blast and Lyon was won partly on the back of it. He travelled to Vienna carrying it.

Chapter 3 — Vienna, Sessions 1 to 5

In Vienna Moreau worked as the party’s Order operative among soldiers and policemen, a French colonel navigating a city full of the Congress’s uniforms. On the evening of 7 August 1814 he was walking the Graben alone, the most isolated investigator in the city at that moment, and the Bauer brothers were waiting for him under contract from Adler. Three stab wounds, one to the throat, staged to look like a robbery. See Moreau Graben Assassination.

His death was the first PC loss of the Vienna chapter and the moment the campaign’s tone sharpened: Vienna was not a diplomatic posting, it was a kill zone. Even dead, Moreau kept working. His body, recovered to the Josephinum, became the documentary chain that produced Fischbein’s intelligence brief, and the false release order that freed his arrested killer became the first hard evidence against Captain Vogel. The soldier’s last contribution to the war was the paper trail his murder left behind. Jay’s next character, Freddy Cavendish, arrived in Session 6.
