Brain Cylinder Lot 14
Origin: Zorab Sale
Description
A cylinder of dull, seamless metal, about fourteen inches by eight, with four sockets for its fittings, of a manufacture no one in Calcutta can place. It radiates heat and hums when fittings are attached; it weighs less than it should and is faintly warm.
The sundry fittings that go with it:
- Hearing fitting: already seated at the sale.
- Speech fitting: a vocal apparatus that allows the occupant to speak; Dr Venn pressed it into a socket with a soft click.
- Sight fitting: a lens on a metal stalk that allows sight, and when held to the eye shows glowing, otherworldly entities and threads of light.
- Crown of needles: a small, sharp fitting, a split cage of needles designed to clamp onto the back of a human head and interface a living brain with the cylinder.
What It Does
It contains the brain of Movses Zorab. With the speech fitting seated it speaks, and with the sight fitting it sees. The crown is for a brain transfer. The party holds the cylinder and its fittings, wrapped in a torn curtain. Since Thursday 13 October the brain in it is dead: with every fitting seated it gives no response (Keeper, 2026-10-15). It is at the Cavendish Compound.
The needle crown is still attached to the cylinder, and the party holds both (Keeper, 2026-10-09).
History
Lot 14 of the Zorab & Sons sale on Wednesday 12 October 1814, brought down from the Himalayas among Movses Zorab’s effects. Hovhannes Zorab unveiled it; when Dr Venn seated the speech fitting it cried out not to be sold. Gregor Zorab seized it and fled to Venns Bungalow. Emma Wentworth knocked it from the desk and the crown tore free of Gregor’s skull. The party took it.

Campaign Log
- Session 13 - Sundry Fittings — unveiled at the sale, spoke in a dead man’s voice, was stolen by Gregor, knocked from Dr Venn’s desk by Emma, and taken by the party with all its fittings wrapped in a torn curtain. The party holds it.
- Session 14 - A Morning of Manners and Monstrosities — Emma brought it to the breakfast table and the party seated every tube: speaking, listening, seeing and the brainstem connector. The brain gave no response; it is dead. It stayed at the Cavendish Compound when the others went upriver.
- Session 15 - The River of Rites and Ruin — still in Emma’s room in the West House while she was upriver.
