Calcutta — The Cycle of Dissolution
The Chapter
October 1814. The investigators come ashore at Chandpal Ghat after five weeks at sea and find Bengal at the turn of the monsoon: a British settlement that catalogues every newcomer within forty-eight hours, an Indian city many times its size on the other side of it, and a river running through both.
They are here because the Aeternum Choir’s fourth ritual segment is to be performed somewhere on the Hooghly, and because Lord Harcourt has one asset in Calcutta and a great deal of hope.
Chapter dates: August–October 1814 (the voyage); 8–25 October (Calcutta).
The Household and the City
The party lodges at the Cavendish compound in Chowringhee, as guests of Hugh Cavendish — Freddy’s cousin, eleven years in Bengal — and his wife Meg Cavendish, who runs the household and the party’s introductions both.
The people who matter early:
- Hugh Cavendish — Company factor, opium river transport. Warm, honest, and quietly being squeezed
- Meg Cavendish — his wife, five months pregnant, and the sharpest social guide in White Town
- Charles Ashworth — the District Magistrate, who effectively runs Calcutta
- Hawthorne Surlish — the free merchant whose godowns every one of Hugh’s consignments must pass through
- Sophia Surlish — Surlish’s wife, who waved at Meg in church and was silenced for it
The places they have been:
- St John’s Church — the settlement’s social hub, and where newcomers are read out from the chancel
- Cavendish Compound — the party’s household, and the least private place in the chapter
- The Calcutta Gazette — advertisements, arrivals and notices; the fastest way to learn what the city is doing
- Chandpal Ghat — where they came ashore, and The Strand beyond it
