Latest Session — August 27, 2026
The morning after their arrival in Calcutta, the party attended Sunday services at St. John's Church, where the rigid social hierarchy of the city made itself immediately apparent. The congregation was seated strictly by rank, with Magistrate Charles Ashworth and the senior families occupying the front pews, while the party sat in the middle alongside their hosts, Hugh and Meg Cavendish. Outside, Havildar Pratap Singh waited with the carriages and other non-Christian servants, where he was…

Anglo Nepalese War
British victory at ruinous cost. Treaty of Sugauli — Nepal cedes Sikkim, Kumaon, Garhwal and the western Terai, accepts a Resident at Kathmandu, and the British begin recruiting Gurkhas into their own service.
Ashworth Dinner Garden Reach
Ashworth named Devendra Ghosh a personal friend and one of the finest men he knows, and invited Adrien to break the journey to Chandernagore at Ghosh's house in Baranagar. The cult's leader now sits behind the Magistrate's own credit. Surlish snubbed the host by proxy; Freddy planted the seed of Cartwright's defection; Emma saved Georgiana's gloves from becoming a scandal. The dinner was interrupted mid-service and has not yet reached its final course.
Renwick Located at Baranagar
Renwick is stationed eight miles north of Calcutta at Baranagar, overseeing an embankment project on the Hooghly. He is not yet posted to the Gurkha campaign, but the window before reassignment is narrow. The party registered that Renwick's post and the Mandir Mahakali temple are the same village.
St Johns Churchyard Hour
The party was catalogued by Calcutta society in a single hour and met most of the season's principal players. Freddy made first contact with Surlish and got a sneer, a warning to audit his own cousin, and confirmation that the merchant fears nothing. Sophia Surlish was silenced in public in front of witnesses. Pratap Singh was solicited for a Company position by a Pelham servant, refused him, swung at him and missed, then bought him.
